A new rule from the U.S. Small Business Administration took effect on July 4, giving small businesses across the country a significant boost in financing options. The change allows qualifying companies to double their borrowing limit, now accessing up to $10 million in funding. This move is expected to help growing firms, including those in Utah, secure the capital needed for expansion, equipment purchases, and operational scaling.
The updated policy applies to the SBA's flagship 7(a) loan program, which has long been a cornerstone for small business lending. Previously, the maximum loan amount stood at $5 million. By raising the cap to $10 million, the SBA aims to keep pace with rising costs and the increasing capital demands of modern small businesses. Lenders will now have more flexibility to approve larger loans while still benefiting from the government guarantee that reduces their risk.
Industry experts say the change is particularly timely. Many small businesses are emerging from a period of high inflation and supply chain disruptions, needing larger sums to invest in inventory, technology, and hiring. The new limit also levels the playing field, allowing smaller firms to compete for contracts and projects that previously required financing beyond the old cap.
Business owners should note that eligibility requirements remain strict. Applicants must still demonstrate strong credit, a solid business plan, and the ability to repay the loan. The SBA encourages entrepreneurs to consult with approved lenders early to prepare documentation. While the higher cap opens new doors, experts caution against over-borrowing. The goal is sustainable growth, not just access to more money.
