Treasury Wine Estates profit slides as US business reset weighs on year

Treasury Wine Estates posted a noticeable decline in annual profit, as the company's ongoing reset of its American operations overshadowed what it described as resilient demand for its premium labels like BV, Frank Family, and Daou. The wine giant said lower shipment volumes and thinner margins, combined with the costs and disruption of restructuring its U.S. supply chain, cut into earnings for the fiscal year.

While consumers continued to reach for the company's higher-end bottles, the overall picture was less bright. The company pointed to a softer market for mid-tier wines and the lingering effects of inventory corrections across retail and wholesale channels. Executives also noted that the push to streamline distribution and upgrade logistics in the United States, a key market, took longer and cost more than initially planned.

Despite the profit slide, management framed the year as a necessary transition. They said the U.S. reset is largely on track and should start delivering efficiency gains in the coming quarters. The company also highlighted growth in its luxury portfolio, particularly in Asia and other international markets, where demand for premium wine remains steady.

For the full year, net profit attributable to shareholders came in well below the prior year, missing analyst expectations. The company did not offer a specific earnings forecast for the next fiscal year but signaled that the worst of the restructuring drag is likely behind it. Shares dipped in early trading following the announcement, though some investors took comfort in the company's reaffirmation that its premium brands continue to hold pricing power.

Looking ahead, Treasury Wine Estates said it will keep focusing on its top-tier labels and direct-to-consumer channels, while being more disciplined about discounting in wholesale markets. The company also plans to complete the remaining pieces of its U.S. warehouse and distribution overhaul by the middle of the next fiscal year. Management acknowledged that consumer confidence in some regions remains fragile, but expressed confidence that the combination of brand strength and a leaner cost base will support a rebound in profitability.
