Arts District businesses struggle during downtown Las Vegas construction project

The summer months are always a slow time for businesses in the Arts District, said Josh Kellman, board president of 18b Arts District. But this year, the usual seasonal lull has turned into a serious struggle, thanks to a massive construction project that has reshaped the neighborhood's streets and sidewalks. What was once a steady flow of foot traffic and weekend visitors has become a trickle, leaving shop owners and restaurateurs counting the days until the work is done.

Kellman notes that the timing could not be worse. With temperatures soaring and tourists staying away from the heat, the district relies heavily on local patrons who come for the art walks, the vintage shops, and the craft breweries. Now, those regulars are finding it hard to even reach the front doors. Detours, blocked lanes, and dust from heavy machinery have turned a pleasant stroll into a chore. The project, which involves replacing aging underground utilities and repaving the main thoroughfares, was supposed to be completed before the peak season. But delays have pushed the timeline well into the fall. Kellman says the board has been in constant contact with city officials, asking for clearer signage and better access for delivery trucks. He understands the work needs to be done, but he wishes the contractors would work overnight or in phases to minimize the impact.
