Fountain Square businesses plead for support as $14M project enters final phase

Business owners in Indianapolis's Fountain Square are asking customers to stick with them as a long-running infrastructure overhaul finally nears its end. The $14 million drainage and streetscape project, designed to curb chronic flooding in the low-lying neighborhood, has entered its final phase. But the months of torn-up sidewalks, closed lanes, and detours have taken a heavy toll on local shops, restaurants, and bars.

Several owners say foot traffic has dropped by as much as half compared to last year. Regulars who used to stop by after work now avoid the area entirely due to construction barriers and limited parking. One cafe manager noted that weekday sales are down roughly 40 percent, while weekend business has been unpredictable. The noise and dust have also made outdoor seating less appealing during the warmer months.

The project, which includes new storm sewers, wider curbs, and repaved streets, is meant to prevent the kind of basement flooding that has plagued the district for decades. City officials say the work is on schedule and should be fully complete by late fall. They have promised to help promote the neighborhood once the barriers come down.

For now, merchants are pleading with locals to make a deliberate effort to visit. Many are offering small discounts or specials to draw people in. As one shop owner put it, the community's support now will determine whether some businesses are still around to enjoy the finished streets.
