Business executives explain what brought their companies to Alabama at BCA conference

At the annual Business Council of Alabama conference, a panel of executives from across the state took the stage to explain what drew their companies to Alabama in the first place, and more importantly, what has convinced them to stay. The conversation was candid, with each leader offering a different reason for choosing the state, but a few common threads quickly emerged.

For several of the executives, the initial decision came down to logistics. Alabama's central location in the Southeast, combined with its expanding network of highways, rail lines, and the Port of Mobile, made it an obvious hub for distribution and manufacturing. One executive noted that his company could reach nearly half of the U.S. population within a two-day drive, which was a decisive factor when comparing sites in other states.

But the panel made it clear that infrastructure alone was not enough. The real reason many of these companies have stayed, and even expanded their operations, is the workforce. The executives praised the state's training programs, particularly the Alabama Industrial Development Training program, which helps tailor employee skills to specific company needs. They also pointed to the work ethic and loyalty of local employees, saying that turnover rates here are noticeably lower than in other regions.

Still, the conversation was not all praise. The executives offered direct advice on how Alabama could improve its pitch to future businesses. Several said the state needs to do a better job of telling its story beyond the automotive and aerospace sectors, highlighting growth in technology, healthcare, and logistics. Others mentioned that while the state is competitive on taxes and incentives, it should focus more on quality-of-life factors like schools, broadband access, and healthcare availability in rural areas.

One recurring suggestion was to strengthen partnerships between companies and community colleges, so that training programs can adapt faster to emerging industries. Another executive said the state should market itself as a place where businesses can scale quickly, not just start up.

The overall message from the panel was positive but forward-looking. Alabama has already proven it can attract major employers, but the executives believe the next step is making sure the state remains competitive as the economy shifts. They left the audience with a simple challenge: keep building on the strengths that brought us here, and do not get comfortable.
