Council caught off guard as mayor seeks funding from local business owners

Several members of the San Antonio city council are raising concerns after learning that Mayor Ron Nirenberg has been seeking financial contributions from local business owners to help close a projected $158 million budget shortfall. The move, which bypassed the usual council approval process, has left some council members questioning the transparency of the administration's approach.

The mayor's office confirmed that discussions with private sector leaders have taken place in recent weeks, focusing on voluntary donations to support city services and infrastructure projects. However, several council members said they were not informed of these talks until after they had begun, leading to accusations that the mayor is acting unilaterally.

"I was caught completely off guard," said District 8 Councilman Manny Pelaez. "We have a budget process for a reason. Going behind the council's back to ask for handouts from local businesses sets a dangerous precedent."

The $158 million gap stems from rising costs and stagnant revenue growth, according to city financial reports. The mayor has argued that private funding could help preserve essential services without raising taxes. But critics worry that such donations could come with strings attached, potentially influencing city policy or creating an uneven playing field for businesses that choose not to contribute.

Councilwoman Ana Sandoval expressed concern about the lack of public input. "This is taxpayer money, whether it comes from a business or a resident. We need a clear, open discussion about how we fill this hole," she said.

The mayor's office has defended the outreach as a standard part of exploring all options. "We are simply asking community partners to step up during a difficult time," a spokesperson said. "No decisions have been made, and any contributions would be subject to council approval."

The council is expected to debate the issue at its next budget workshop, where members are demanding a full accounting of which businesses have been contacted and what commitments, if any, have been made.
