Parts of Northern Indiana are still working to recover after a devastating tornado tore through the area in March. In response, Indiana Governor Mike Braun has issued a state disaster declaration, unlocking access to low-interest disaster recovery loans for those who qualify.
The loans are available through the U.S. Small Business Administration, though they are not limited to businesses. Homeowners, renters, and nonprofit organizations can also apply. The funds are meant to cover repairs, replacement of personal property, and other expenses not fully covered by insurance.
Eligible applicants must have suffered physical damage or economic injury as a direct result of the storm. The tornado caused widespread destruction across several counties, leaving many families displaced and small businesses struggling to reopen.
Governor Braun emphasized the importance of getting financial relief to communities quickly. The loans offer a way for people to rebuild without taking on high-interest debt from private lenders. Application deadlines and specific terms depend on the county and the type of damage reported.
Local officials are urging anyone affected to apply as soon as possible. Even those who are unsure of their eligibility are encouraged to submit an application. The process is designed to be straightforward, with SBA representatives available to help guide applicants through the paperwork.
For many in the region, these loans represent a critical step toward returning to normal life after the storm.
