River outfitters and recreation businesses across metro Atlanta are reporting that an unusually persistent spike in E. coli contamination is keeping visitors out of the water during the peak summer season. Following several days of steady rainfall, water quality tests along the Chattahoochee River have shown bacteria levels that exceed safety thresholds, forcing a number of rental services and guided trip operators to close or cancel reservations.
The contamination is linked to stormwater runoff, which can carry animal waste and sewage into the river. While elevated bacteria counts are common after heavy rain, local business owners say this event has lasted longer than typical summer storms. Some operators have had to turn away dozens of customers daily, losing thousands of dollars in revenue during what should be their busiest weeks.
Health officials are advising the public to avoid direct contact with the water in affected areas until tests show a return to safe levels. The closures have frustrated families and tourists who planned tubing trips and kayak outings. For now, many are left waiting for drier weather and clearer water before they can get back on the river.
