iRhythm Technologies is moving to consolidate its position in the cardiac monitoring space. The San Francisco-based company announced it will acquire VitalConnect, a private competitor, in a deal valued at roughly $288 million. The purchase price includes about $237.5 million in cash, with an additional $50 million paid in iRhythm common stock.
VitalConnect is known for its wearable biosensor platform, which tracks heart rhythms and other vital signs. The company's patch-based monitors are used in both hospital and home settings. iRhythm, best known for its Zio patch system, is looking to expand its reach beyond traditional ambulatory monitoring into continuous, real-time patient tracking. The acquisition is expected to bring together two complementary product lines, giving iRhythm a stronger foothold in the acute care and remote patient monitoring markets.
The deal is still subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval. iRhythm says it expects the transaction to close in the second half of this year. Executives from both companies have framed the merger as a way to speed up innovation and offer doctors a more complete picture of a patient's heart health. The move also comes as competition in the cardiac monitoring field heats up, with several smaller players vying for market share. iRhythm believes the combined company will be better positioned to win hospital contracts and expand its customer base.
