Metro Council approves ordinance requiring late-night security for some businesses

Metro Council approves ordinance requiring late-night security for some businesses

The Louisville Metro Council has passed a new ordinance that will require certain businesses operating late at night to provide on-site security. The measure, approved during Thursday's council meeting, targets establishments that have been identified as sources of repeated public safety issues, such as noise complaints, fights, or other disturbances.

Under the new rules, businesses that stay open between midnight and 6 a.m. and have a documented history of problems will need to hire licensed security personnel during those hours. The requirement does not apply to all late-night spots, only those flagged by Metro police or code enforcement after a review process. Business owners will have a grace period to comply, with the first enforcement actions expected later this year.

Council members who backed the ordinance said it is a practical step to reduce strain on police resources and make nightlife safer for workers and patrons. Some business owners, however, argued that the added cost could hurt small operations already struggling with tight margins. The council included a waiver process for businesses that can show financial hardship or prove they have taken other effective safety measures. The ordinance now heads to the mayor's desk for final approval.
