Mountain biking is an investment in children, community

On Father's Day, my son and I were unloading our mountain bikes at Slaughter Pen, looking forward to spending the day together on the trails. As we were getting ready, I watched a group of kids roll in with their dads, all of them covered in dust and grinning ear to ear. One boy, maybe eight years old, was showing his father how to clean his chain, explaining every step with the confidence of a seasoned mechanic. That moment stuck with me. It was not just about riding bikes. It was about patience, trust, and shared effort.

Mountain biking is often seen as a hobby, a way to get exercise, or a weekend escape. But it is much more than that. For children, it builds resilience, problem-solving skills, and a healthy relationship with risk. Kids learn to read terrain, to fall and get back up, and to push through fear. Those lessons carry over into school, friendships, and later life. For the community, trails become gathering places. They bring together families, neighbors, and even strangers who share a common love for the outdoors. Local businesses benefit too, from bike shops to coffee stands near trailheads.

Investing in mountain biking means investing in youth development and social connection. It means building and maintaining trails, offering youth programs, and making biking accessible to families who might not otherwise afford it. The return is not measured in medals or race times. It is measured in stronger kids, closer families, and a more connected town. That Father's Day, I did not need a gift. I had the best one already, a son who wanted to ride with me, and a community that made it possible.
