The Concord Monitor has taken a deep dive into the reality of downtown commerce, creating a detailed inventory of storefronts along Main Street and its immediate side streets. The project goes beyond a simple list, categorizing each space by its type of business, how long it has been operating, its advertised hours, and even who owns the building.
This raw data was then used to build an interactive digital map of the downtown corridor. The tool allows anyone to select a specific day and time, then simulate a walk down the sidewalk to see which shops, restaurants, and services are actually open at that moment. The goal is to answer a question many residents and visitors have asked: When is downtown Concord truly "open for business"?
The findings reveal a complex picture. While the core lunch and early afternoon hours see most doors unlocked, the evening and early morning landscapes are more fragmented. Some blocks become quiet after 5 p.m., while others, particularly those near entertainment venues, remain active. The inventory also highlights the mix of long-standing local institutions alongside newer arrivals, as well as the presence of vacant spaces that break up the retail flow. By mapping the hours and tenures side-by-side, the project offers a clear, data-driven snapshot of the district's current commercial health and its daily rhythms.
