A new study confirms what many vascular specialists have long suspected: patients with peripheral artery disease, or PAD, who stick closely to their doctor's advice tend to have much better results than those who do not. The findings highlight the importance of consistent exercise and medication adherence for managing this often painful condition.
PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries, usually in the legs, reducing blood flow. Common symptoms include leg cramps during walking, numbness, and slow-healing sores. Without proper management, the disease can lead to serious complications, including amputation.
Researchers analyzed data from hundreds of PAD patients over several years. They found that those who exercised regularly, even just walking, and who took all their prescribed medications without skipping doses, experienced fewer hospitalizations and less disease progression. In contrast, patients who ignored medical advice faced higher risks of worsening symptoms and emergency interventions.
Doctors emphasize that PAD is a chronic condition requiring lifelong attention. Simple steps like daily walks, quitting smoking, and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol can make a significant difference. The study serves as a reminder that patient cooperation is just as important as the treatments themselves. For those living with PAD, following the plan laid out by their healthcare team may be the most effective way to stay active and avoid serious health setbacks.
