For Dennis Ouellette, the owner of Ontario Orchards Farm Market, agriculture isn't just a business—it's a lifelong passion that continues to drive him forward. At 80 years old, Ouellette has no plans to retire, finding daily joy in the vibrant family enterprise he built from the ground up.
His journey began on a 37-acre family farm, which he eventually expanded to nearly 300 acres. In 1967, he and his wife, June, officially established Ontario Orchards at its original location, transforming a simple horse barn into a thriving destination. Over more than 60 years, the market has grown significantly, constantly evolving based on customer feedback and introducing a wide array of products.
"What keeps me going is I totally enjoy what I am doing," Ouellette said. He credits his dedicated staff, wonderful customers, and, most importantly, his family—including his wife, daughters, and grandchildren—for sustaining the business's energy. The market is a true four-season operation, offering everything from freshly pressed cider and baked goods to apples year-round.
While the market sources some products globally, Ouellette expresses particular pride in their local offerings. The farm sells nearly everything produced on its 200 acres directly to customers on-site. He also attributes the market's dynamic evolution to the "young blood and new energy" brought by his daughters, ensuring the business remains vibrant and innovative.
With a staff ranging from 60 in summer to about 25 in winter, Ouellette emphasizes the value of a knowledgeable team. He enjoys every aspect of the work, from the changing seasons to the constant introduction of new ideas. His enthusiasm remains undimmed as he looks ahead to many more years at the helm of the orchard he loves.
