Spirit Airlines has announced it is ceasing all operations after 34 years in business. The ultra-low-cost carrier, famous for its bright yellow planes and rock-bottom fares, confirmed the shutdown on Saturday, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and employees without jobs.
The airline, which pioneered the no-frills model in the United States, filed for bankruptcy protection last year but failed to secure a buyer or restructuring deal. Industry analysts had warned for months that the carrier was running out of cash. The company's last-ditch efforts to merge with another airline fell through earlier this year.
Travelers who booked future flights are being told to seek refunds through their credit card companies or travel insurance providers. The airline's website and customer service lines have gone dark. At major airports like Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, and Detroit, Spirit counters were empty Saturday morning with signs taped to the gates.
The shutdown marks the end of an era for budget air travel. Spirit forced larger airlines to lower prices on many routes, but it also drew criticism for extra fees on everything from carry-on bags to water. The airline employed roughly 8,000 people, most of whom now face an uncertain job market. Rival carriers have said they will offer discounted fares for stranded Spirit passengers, but details remain unclear.
