Two bills currently under consideration in the Michigan legislature could establish a lifeline for businesses financially harmed by prolonged and unplanned road construction projects. The proposed measures would create a mechanism for companies to seek reimbursement for losses directly attributed to such infrastructure work.
The legislation targets projects that cause significant access issues, either through sudden commencement or extended timelines that exceed initial estimates. Proponents argue that while road improvements are necessary, small businesses often bear a disproportionate burden when customer access is blocked for weeks or months. The financial strain from such disruptions can be severe, impacting revenue and threatening viability.
Under the proposed framework, eligible businesses could apply for state compensation to cover documented losses. The process would require proving that the roadwork was a direct cause of financial hardship. Supporters state that this initiative recognizes the critical role small businesses play in local economies and aims to provide fairness when public projects inadvertently create private economic hardship. The bills are now poised for further debate and committee review in the state capitol.
