Ben’s Chili Bowl is back in business

Ben’s Chili Bowl is back in business

The iconic Ben's Chili Bowl is back in business, and its grand reopening on Friday turned U Street NW into a full-blown block party. Locals and tourists alike lined up for hours to get a taste of the famous half-smoke chili dogs, marking the end of a brief closure that had left the neighborhood feeling a bit empty.

The restaurant, a D.C. institution since 1958, shut its doors last month for renovations. But the wait was worth it. On Friday morning, the smell of grilled sausages and spicy chili filled the air as a DJ spun classic soul music from a makeshift stage. Balloons in the restaurant's signature red and yellow colors lined the street, and city officials joined the crowd to celebrate the milestone.

Owner Virginia Ali, now in her 90s, made a brief appearance to thank the community. She stood near the entrance, waving to the crowd as customers cheered. "This place is more than a restaurant," she said. "It's a gathering spot, a piece of history."

The reopening also drew a younger generation of fans who had never visited before. Many posted photos of their meals on social media, calling it a must-try D.C. experience. By late afternoon, the line still stretched around the block, but no one seemed to mind. For a few hours, U Street felt like the heart of the city again.
