D.C. Street Vendors Face Growing Anxiety Amid Increased Immigration Enforcement

A street vendor in Washington, D.C., who holds permanent residency, has expressed her deepening fear of potential encounters with immigration officers. Matea, originally from El Salvador, has operated her stand on 14th Street in Columbia Heights for five years. However, the recent deployment of the National Guard and an uptick in federal immigration enforcement in the capital have created a climate of anxiety for her and others in similar situations.

Matea shared that the atmosphere has drastically changed, making her daily work more stressful. She worries not only for her own safety but also for the livelihoods of fellow vendors who may not have the same protections. The increased presence of federal authorities has led to a noticeable decline in foot traffic, impacting sales and the overall vibrancy of the community. As fear mounts, many vendors are left grappling with uncertainty about their future and the sustainability of their businesses in this tense environment.
