Google's Vice President of Search, Liz Reid, recently shared critical advice for entrepreneurs navigating the rapidly shifting landscape of online discovery. In a conversation with Inc., Reid outlined three fundamental principles that businesses must embrace to thrive as artificial intelligence reshapes how people find information.
First, Reid emphasized that businesses must prioritize creating original, authoritative content over chasing search engine algorithms. As AI-generated summaries and overviews become more common in search results, Google's systems are increasingly designed to reward content that demonstrates genuine expertise and firsthand experience. Companies that simply repackage existing information will struggle to gain visibility.
Second, she advised entrepreneurs to focus on building a strong brand identity outside of Google. With AI tools now capable of answering queries directly, relying solely on organic search traffic is risky. Businesses should invest in email lists, social media communities, and direct customer relationships to create a stable audience that doesn't depend on any single platform.
Finally, Reid stressed the importance of adapting to a conversational search environment. Users are asking longer, more natural questions, often expecting detailed answers rather than a list of links. Businesses that optimize their websites and content to answer these specific, spoken-style queries will have a clear advantage. This means moving away from keyword stuffing and toward clear, helpful explanations that address the user's underlying intent.
Reid's advice comes as Google rolls out its AI Overviews feature to more users, a change that has caused concern among some website owners who fear a drop in referral traffic. However, she argued that these changes ultimately reward businesses that are genuinely useful, not those that game the system. For entrepreneurs, the message is clear: adapt to an AI-first search world by being more human, more direct, and more valuable than the competition.
