Advanced Micro Devices reported a sharp increase in both profit and revenue in its latest quarterly results, fueled by explosive growth in its data center operations. The chipmaker's data center segment saw sales jump 57 percent compared to the same period last year, a surge driven by robust demand for its EPYC server processors and the accelerating rollout of its Instinct graphics processing units.
The company's overall revenue climbed 24 percent year-over-year, reaching $7.1 billion, while net income more than doubled. AMD's data center business now accounts for a majority of its total sales, reflecting the broader industry shift toward AI and high-performance computing infrastructure. Executives highlighted that the ramp-up of Instinct GPU shipments, used for training and running large artificial intelligence models, was a key contributor to the segment's performance.
The results underscore AMD's growing foothold in a market long dominated by rival Nvidia. While the PC and gaming segments showed more modest gains, the data center division's momentum provided a strong counterbalance. AMD's CEO noted that the company expects continued strength in the coming quarters as cloud providers and enterprise customers expand their AI capabilities. The earnings report sent shares higher in after-hours trading, as investors responded to the clear signal that AMD is capitalizing on the AI boom.
